EDUCATION
“Adults learn by attaching new concepts and ideas to things that they already know.”
The highway safety triangle model (engineering, education and enforcement) for increasing traffic safety has proven itself to be effective for many years. All three elements contribute directly to traffic safety, including that of pedestrians and bicyclists, but education is a powerful tool for changing behavior and improving safety skills.
Over the years we’ve learned that the most effective education programs target a specific community problem and are part of a comprehensive program that includes engineering and enforcement plans as well. Let us analyze your crash data to help you get a handle on your individual educational needs.
Pedestrians, bicyclists and motorists alike can benefit from educational tools and messages that teach them the rules, rights and responsibilities of various modes of travel. There are major differences in the abilities, behavioral patterns and learning capacities of these different groups so WE BIKE, etc. has tailored educational programs for many specific audiences. We work with you to customize a training course for your audience and to the behaviors you want to change.
“If people do not have their own experiences to use as a reference for new ideas and concepts, you can give them yours.”
Programs for Adults
More adults are taking up cycling than ever before, yet most still rely on their cars for the majority of their transportation needs. Learning more about cycling greatly increases confidence and can be a great aid in learning to share the road more effectively, whether you are behind two wheels or one.
Adults learn by attaching new concepts and ideas to things that they already know. Once educated, they will follow the rules of the road because they’ll know it’s safer, it’s courteous and it’s the law.
Let WE BIKE, etc. help your community get more adult cyclists safely on the road with workshops on basic cycling, commuting, bike repairs, long distance touring and more.
Whether part of a Safe Routes to School program or not, WE BIKE, etc. can help develop your education programs for children – giving new cyclists the tools and knowledge they need to safely share the road and have fun doing it!
Programs for Motorists
WE BIKE, etc. can help you educate motorists to safely share the road with cyclists and pedestrians. We realize that motorists may not have any experience cycling and therefore may not understand the situations that confront bicyclists in traffic. The more motorists know about cycling safety, the safer streets will be for everyone on them.
Our training emphasizes the benefits of sharing the road, such as safer, more inviting streets with reduced crime, increased property value, a cleaner environment and an overall enhanced quality of life. We also include facts about why crashes happen and what risky behavior is, so that they can avoid and prevent future crashes. Our training programs for city fleet drivers and other high users will make a great impact in your community.
